PHILOSOPHY
The statements in this section identify the
beliefs upon which Whakapai Hauora is
founded and operates within.
TE KAHUI POU
Ko te kahui pou o te tino rangatiratanga
ko te oranga tinana; ara te urumatua
o te kauae runga me te ururanga o te
kauae raro.
Ko enei kete urutau e whae ake nei ko te
waimarietanga o nga maatua a Rangi ko
Papa e mau tonu mo ake ake.
Well-being grows in the wellness of two
dimensions of health - physical and
spiritual.
Well-being is a balance of these two
dimensions enabling us to live in harmony
with Mother Earth.
MANAAKI
Manaakitanga is one of our most important
values as Maori. It is protecting,
people-centred and extends beyond routine
caring. Manaaki is concerned with life
and involves sensitivity, caring, empathy,
tolerance, compassion and accountability.
TAONGA TUKU IHO
Every whanau and every member of that
whanau is a treasure, created by the Atua.
They have rights and obligations to their
cultural beliefs, values and practices within
their whanau, hapu and community which
are to be respected and edified. No
individual person is an isolate of their
culture and therefore has no lesser or
greater rights and obligations than the
whanau. People should be involved in their
own health care, treated respectfully and
with dignity.
ENVIRONMENT
We want to be leaders in health care and
social services, recognising also that the
health of our environments (including
Papatuanuku) and the health and well-being
of people are interdependent. It follows
therefore that there is a reciprocal
relationship between environments and
healthy people.
FOUR CORNERSTONES OF HEALTH
Whakapai Hauora practices daily within the
four cornerstones of health Taha Wairua
(the inner being), Taha Tinana (the body
and soul), Taha Hinengaro (the head,
storehouse of knowledge) and Taha
Whanau (the family and its extensions).
In doing so, this ensures a holistic delivery
of health care and social services.
TE TIRITI O WAITANGI
Te Tiriti O Waitangi is the basis of the
relationship between Maori and the Crown.
The Articles affirmed existing rights and
created new ones for Maori. The crown has
a fiduciary duty to work with Maori health
Providers, to ensure the well-being of Maori
to enable them to achieve the same level of
health status and well-being as non-Maori.
the newly created District Health Boards,
also share this responsibility as agents of
the Crown.
Whakapai Hauora's aims & objectives
are to:
Encourage whanau
to take control over
their own health (empowerment);
Provide culturally
appropriate Maori
holistic
and integrated health care and
social services (Whanau/ Marae based
